I like the idea of Foolish Heart a lot. It's the explosive moment of joy following the first jam when Jerry leads back into the final verse, and to a lesser extent the clarion call of the opening notes. I saw the first (6-22-88) and one of the best (3-19-90).

I like how everyone plays lines around the one. A game of hot potato when it gets going. Nobody drop it! And for some performances there are large stretches when they didn't. But, there was always something nagging at it.

The lyrics, which are manageable, would have blown entrances or exits or worse, Fozzie just making you hold on till the first jam. Or a lackluster effort by the band (Phil must be on for this song to work), especially post vocals. A nit here, a pick there. We never got The one.

Onto lobster's pick. I changed sources to (http://tinyurl.com/7rveth7). lobster why did you go w/ the AUD? (just curious). It's very cluttered after the first minute. Everyone seems to be trying. Vince needed to be turned down in the mix, but that really doesn't need to be said anymore I think. Even w/ the source I went with (and I checked them all) no awards will be given for the recording. Finally, it's Fozzie time w/ a few blown lyrics included.

O.K., now that the unpleasant notes are gone through, the good stuff. The very beginning is nimble as everyone is finding a place. Phil is present and accounted for. The first mimi-jam is good and I like Bobby's little flourishes. Once the vocals are cleared we get a long meandering jam that is interesting at times, most of all towards the end.

To your question lobster, I do not like the placement. I always liked three; first set opener, first set closer or second set opener. It needs to be contained in a song (9 to 11 minutes) as it doesn't have the power post vocals. It can sound an awful like CF then, but the energy and time to make it a bigger song never seems to have been put in.

btw- Is this the longest Foolish Heart?
